Communications is an underlying theme throughout the adaptation process, whether through pitching the case to embed climate change on the corporate risk register or through working with Service Managers to identify and manage climate risks. This workshop examined the main challenges in communicating climate change by exploring the use of values-based communications and looked at how to address these through the use of seven basic rules:

  1. Always think 'who am I speaking to'?
  2. Understand and speak to their values
  3. Avoid 'environmentalist' messages
  4. Make climate change feel here and now
  5. Offer a clear reward
  6. Tell an inspiring story
  7. Use trusted messengers and peer networks

Jamie Clarke, Executive Director from the Climate Outreach & Information Network (COIN) introduced the concept and principles for successful values-based climate communication and ran a seminar to help participants develop their own messages.

Mairi Davies from Historic Scotland and Fiona Macleod from The City of Edinburgh Council also gave presentations on how adaptation is being addressed in their organisations.
